The Art of Comedy – Vir Das

Hey everyone!

Let me be perfectly clear, I am not a comedian and I don’t have much knowledge about comedy. I just appreciate the art form a lot. Many of you might know about Vir Das from Conan.

I was listening to Vir Das on Chalchitra Talks and there are some things that stuck with me. I should share it with everyone.

“I do think we are struggling to redefine what masculinity is… at some level” Vir says when they were talking about new age Hollywood actors emerging.

“At the other extreme you’ve got aplha male hustlers all over instagram that are this strong-man culture but they have somehow conflated masculinity with cruelty” he continued.

“I don’t know if that’s a direction to follow for anybody. And any kind of sensitivity is conflated with weakness which I don’t agree with either. Because to me masculinity is… courage.
And I think the two tenets of real courage are empathy and work.
Where you empathize with everybody around you and you do what it takes, as a man, to make everybody’s life easier. Whether they see it or not. Whether they appreciate it or not.

“But… at no point should doing what it takes come at the cost of kindness. To me that’s real masculinity. When you can put in long hours, hard work, secure everybody and be kind the entire time.”

– Vir Das

Now that puts in some perspective. That is what you get to hear when you talk to a wise person. And it’s not just about masculinity I think. If I can make everybody else’s life easier as well as mine, then I am human.

And that is… now I think I should have written a better title. But it is okay. Comedy. Comedy. Comedy (SEO purposes). Do not care as long as the word gets out. As long as the publish button is working.

See you next time!
